Sustainable Development

Forest development
In this programme, the company establishes partnerships with independent rural landowners for eucalypt forest plantation on unused land. The object is to enable small and medium sized rural properties to benefit from the spread of conservation know-how.

Mapping
This is a survey of the state of conservation of the nature reserves, that indicates priority areas for management and preservation aimed at meeting the company's need to harvest raw material, protect the environment of native vegetation as much as of fauna in the region. In this are recorded details of mammals, birds, insects and every species of flora.

The term 'sustainable' means that natural resources cannot be exploited in a predatory manner. In other words, the forest where wood is extracted for panel manufacture is constantly being renewed through replantation with eucalypt and pine trees.

Social programmes and projects are being developed to make adults and children aware of environmental conservation, through combating wastage of water, among many other actions.

Sustainable development, along with environmental education, translate into the commitment ABIPA member companies to the preservation of nature and to compliance with environmental regulations in force.
There are various development programmes designed to unite the company with communities where they operate. Among these are:

Mapping the state of conservation of nature reserves;
The 'Matas Ciliares' project;
Silvicultural practices;
Selection of tree species;
Forest harvesting;
Prevention and control of forest fires;
Development and leasing of forests;
Waste control: selective collection of garbage;
Effluent treatment system;
Social activities: first aid training, walking trails, worker schooling, vaccination and
blood donation campaigns.

The environmental policy of these companies comprises four major objectives: A conservation plan; Environmental education; an Environmental management system and Socio-environmental responsibility. In summary, these objectives establish a basis for the production activities through ? factors that ensure the preservation of the whole ecosystem and the panel producers' commitment to their neighbouring communities.

High productivity levels in wood production in the forests of ABIPA member companies are achieved by observing the principles of sustainable development and multiple use. What guarantees that is the continual investment in new technology, genetic improvement of trees and cloning, apart from sufficient fertilisation and silvicultural practices that maintain and improve soil fertility.
